Rodents

People and rodents don’t get along. They’re gross; they’re pesky, and they’re also dangerous. It’s a lot tougher than you might think to clear them out, and once they make their way in, it’s even harder to stop the influx. The common tricks for fixing rodent problems aren’t enough. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a small coin, and it only takes an opening less than an inch or so for a rat to be able to get in.

It takes an expert to spot the many locations rodents could be sneaking in, and deal with it appropriately. If even a single hole goes unsealed, rats and mice will only continue to flood into your home or business. Adding to the problem, rodents reproduce at astonishing rates. A study by Boston University showed a single rat could have 8 to 16 babies in a litter. Another study shows rats can have up to 6 litters a year. That means what may start as a small problem could result in hundreds of rodents taking over your home and your life.

Some traps may advertise as all-purpose for rodent removal. Unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. If your problem is more advanced and the rodents have started breeding, setting out a few traps isn’t going to cut it. The CDC also warns that rats and mice spread over 35 diseases worldwide. What’s worse, you don’t have to come into direct contact with a rodent for a disease to spread – they can also infect people through contact with feces, urine, and even saliva. The CDC says you can even be infected with certain viruses and diseases by breathing in dust or eating food contaminated with rodent droppings and urine. If you touch contaminated water or soil, and then later touch your nose or eyes, you can become infected as well. On top of that, other common bugs like mosquitoes can spread diseases from rats to humans. Those diseases vary widely in their effects. Some can cause flu-like symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and fatigue; others are far more serious, causing hemorrhaging, deafness or blindness, ulcers, encephalitis; some can even be fatal.

As you can see, rodents are no joke, and neither is the task of cleaning up after them. The Humane Society of the United States says rodents are so hard to beat because they adjust to change. Their adaptability is what makes them so hard to stay on top of. The Humane Society also says the best way to control rats is to keep them from taking up residence in the first place; that’s why you need to call the experts.
