Matawan, NJ

The state of New Jersey has a rich history, and no borough has more to brag about than Matawan. Its history dates back to the 18th century, but it didn't earn its name until almost 100 years later. The designated area was carved from Raritan in 1857, along with Aberdeen. After the Civil War, people in Matawan Township started to want more independence and control over their own goings-on, so they started working for incorporation. They finally got it in 1885.

Matawan's growth didn't come without some challenges. In 1901, the worst fire in the town's history took out an entire block in the business district. Fifteen years later, the area saw five shark attacks in just 12 days, four of which were fatal. In the normally calm and soft-flowing Matawan Creek, the very thing for which Matawan was named, a ten-year-old boy and his would-be-rescuer were killed by sharks. The attacks ended when an 8ft long, 325lb Great White Shark was finally caught. The events that transpired were the basis of the blockbuster movie, “Jaws.” That creek is considered entirely safe these days; there's even a business called "A Canoe to You" that delivers canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards to people wanting to recreate on the water.

Today, the borough is a well-off area, with the average household pulling in over $108,000 a year. Many people who live in Matawan commute to work in New York City. A direct line from the Matawan-Aberdeen train station can get people to the city in about an hour.
The suburb of 2.4 square miles boasts a population of about 8,700 people. It's been shrinking slowly but steadily since the 1990s. That could change, though, with the help of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan. The goal is to build up the downtown areas and emphasize the coastline access to build up the economy. Matawan is one of nine municipalities involved in that effort.

The city is home to several fun businesses that draw people in. The Furry Paw Pics Bespoke Art And Boutique show off art in multiple forms, from clothing to home décor. If you'd prefer something more active, imagine a bar combined with an axe-throwing arena. Bury The Hatchet is a go-to for parties or even just a fun afternoon. If you're looking for a bite to eat, there are plenty of great local options. For instance, you might want to visit Shanghai Bun Restaurant. The traditional Chinese restaurant is 5 star rated and offers a unique dining experience. Maloney's Pub and Grill is a local staple, serving up a mix of classic American burgers, seafood, and fancier plates and flatbreads. You can choose a drink from a list of over 125 taps and fill up a growler while you're there.
