The borough of Highlands, NJ, maybe one of the most aptly named places in the United States. From Maine to Texas, the highest point of coastal land sits at 226 feet above sea level. The surroundings made quite an impression on Giovanni da Verrazano, who in 1524 described Highlands' geography. The area wasn't extensively explored until 1609, when Henry Hudson and his crew climbed the now famous hills. One of his men, John Colman, perished here, and he was the first European to die in America.

One of the most famous landmarks here is the Twin Lights. These lighthouses were the site of many historical events. Originally built in 1828, the first Fresnel lenses in the US were installed in 1841. The lenses increased the distance light could be seen with the naked eye from a ship to 20 miles, and in 1852, the illumination emanating from the Twin Lights was named the best in the nation. Other notable events at the Twin Lights include The Pledge of Allegiance being recited for the first time at an official event, Marconi demonstrating the first viable wireless telegraph communication, and America's Cup Yacht Challenge was held for the first time. In 1935, the US Army demonstrated radar for the first time.  In 1962, it became a Historic Site and remains today as a museum of lighthouse history.

In 1917, Jack Bahrs and his wife bought a grounded houseboat and started cooking chowder in it. For over a century, the family has been serving guests, over 12 million at last estimate.
