Colts Neck, New Jersey

 Colts Neck, NJ

A township known for its' horse ranches, spacious homes, and beautiful golf courses, Colt's Neck is a residential township in New Jersey, located just forty-five miles south of New York City. It was created by the New Jersey Legislature in 1847 from portions of Freehold, Middletown, and Shrewsbury Townships and was first called Atlantic Township. The name changed to Colts Neck based on a referendum held on November 6th, 1962. It has been ranked as one of the state’s highest-income communities based on 2013-2017 data from the American Community Survey. Residents had a median household income of $167,480 – fifth in the state among municipalities with 10,000 or more people and more than twice the state median. Many residents move here for the wide-open spaces while remaining close to New York City and the Jersey Shore.

Colts Neck has strict zoning ordinances which have kept out urban development and chain stores, allowing locally owned businesses to thrive while still being close to local attractions like movie theaters, malls, and other community amenities in neighboring cities. The township's Farmland Preservation Committee has preserved nearly 1,000 acres of land, which is one of the ways large-scale development has been prevented. Because there is no public water or sewage, most homes must be on two, five, or ten acre lots. In the 1970s, many wooded areas in the district were developed into ranch-style homes, but in the 1980s, and continuing today, much of that land has been replaced with mansions and sprawling estates.

As you can tell by its name, this township has a strong presence in the equestrian industry. There are many ranches that raise these beautiful creatures and offer a place to ride or take lessons. A few of the most popular ones are Victory Stables and Colonial Farms. Colts Neck is known for having several golf courses that are perfectly set up to challenge golfers of all skill levels. The Prestigious Trump National Colts Neck is a par-72, eighteen-hole championship course, plus a five-hole short course. Their signature “19th hole” is a short par-3 with an island green, meant for closest to the pin contests among finishing golfers.

Other incredible courses to play here include Monmouth County Golf and Pebble Creek Golf Club, the second of which was designed by legendary course architect Hal Purdy. The nearby Monmouth Mall gives visitors a chance to shop until they drop at fashionable stores like Zumiez, American Eagle, and Pandora. For a few hours off of your feet you can catch the latest movie, and then grab a bite at the food court with delicious options like Firebirds, Fuze Eatery, and TeriTeri.
