Belford, NJ

Synonymous with fishing, the area of Belford, NJ, was a hotspot in the early 1600s. Originally known as Shoal Landing, the first anglers here were Dutch settlers and the Lenni Lenape Indians. By the middle of the 1800s, improved transportation made it easier for fishermen and farmers to sell their goods in New York City and the surrounding areas. In 1891, due to the boom in the local economy and the addition of a railroad station, the area split from Port Monmouth, and Belford was established. Today, much of the old-world charm is retained as more than 50% of the homes were built before 1959.

It seems the approximate 1,800 residents are still reaping the benefits of a prosperous beginning. The average household income is nearly 100,00 dollars more than the national average, and the average home value is 160,00 dollars more than the national. From 2020 to 2021, property value increased by over nineteen percent, and the great quality of life is reflected in population growth of almost 25% since 2020.

For those looking for the excitement of the bright lights and big city, a 50-minute ferry ride finds you in the heart of Manhattan. This represents a savings of almost half an hour for commuters, but realistically, the NY-NJ area has some of the worst traffic in the nation, so the number is much greater. If you're more inclined to stay closer to home for some action, give the Gravity Vault a try. This indoor rock gym offers private training for more advanced climbers, beginner classes for first-timers or those looking to beat their fear of heights, and belay certification training. The water sport enthusiasts can enjoy a swim, boating, or cast a line looking for flounder, striped bass, and big bluefish. At the end of the day, make sure to stop by the #1 tourist hotspot, The Belford Brewing Company. Here you can find delicious nano-brews in a great atmosphere that is kid and pet friendly, offers tours and open mic nights. Per New Jersey law, there is no food on the menu, but patrons can bring their own. There are many options within walking distance for pizza, Chinese, Mexican, and traditional diner fare. Come October, join the crew for Belftoberfest and the 16 different beers on tap.

For a hair-raising way to end the evening, visit Seabrook-Wilson House. Built in the 1600s and used as a tavern in the late 1700s, it is said that British soldiers would discuss strategy here, which the owner gave to Colonials. There are said to be five ghosts wandering around, including the infamous pirate Captain Morgan.

If there is something that's more frightening than ghosts, it's bugs. You can't call Ghostbusters, but you can contact Elite Pest Control. We are Belford's top-rated pest control service, so if the little critters are causing a big issue, we are here for you. As always, we offer free estimates.
