Atlantic Highlands

Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey

 Atlantic Highlands, NJ

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, New York Bay, and Manhattan sits a small city with Victorian Era roots. Once known as Portland Pointe, Atlantic Highlands has been dubbed the "Jewel of the Bayshore." The town of under 5000 residents lay claim to the east coast's highest point south of Maine, Mount Mitchill. The first Assembly of New Jersey met here in 1667, and many Revolutionary War skirmishes were fought in this area.

Standing 200 feet above sea level since 1828 is the Twin Lights Lighthouse. Use of the highlands dates back to 1746 when the New Jersey Militia built a whale oil lamp to alert New York City of impending French Warships. The lighthouse played a role in developing technology for future lighthouses and was the first American lighthouse to use a Fresnel lens. A demonstration of the wireless telegraph by Guglielmo Marconi took place here in 1899.

For a true taste of the area's history, Strauss Mansion Museum is a can't miss. Built in 1893, the 21 room Queen Anne-style home is now run by the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society. It is the only structure of its type in Monmouth County that's open to the public. Rooms authentic to the era are enjoyed by many, and a self-guided tour is free. There are monthly events like 'Jazz at the Mansion' and the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society’s architectural walking tour.

Don't be surprised if you feel like someone is watching you as the mansion is a top spot for ghost hunters. The Starz television show "Ghost on the Coast" broadcast their first-ever live ghost hunt from the mansion. Then there is "Bud's Grave." After the tragic death of his son, a local man created a shrine of dolls, toys, and children's items to try and lure his son back from the dead. Many witnesses claim to have seen an apparition hovering over the shrine, presumably Bud returning to play with the toys.

During the 1920s, at the height of Prohibition, the city became a hot spot for bootleggers, smugglers, and rumrunners. During this time, Mobster Vito Genovese came to power, and he later called the place home. Genovese was the inspiration behind Don Corleone in "The Godfather."

Steeped in history, the area today is full of family-friendly things to do and events. Take a day back to nature with a visit to the Hartshorne Woods Trail or the Henry Hudson Trail. Take your choice of running, hiking, biking, and enjoy the scenic views. When a day out calls for something sweet, there is none better than Nancie's Ice Cream and Café. Stop in for one of the house specials or catch the team on the road at one of the many city events like the FilmOneFest or the Summer Concert series.
